Update:  10:30 p.m.

Rockbridge Co., VA-The fire on Elephant Knob Mountain has consumed 150 acres at this point, and Buena Vista Fire Chief Butch Lawhorne says it isn't fully contained.

Crews were using helicopters to dip buckets in nearby creeks to dump water onto the flames. They were used until it got dark.

Fire crews from nine departments helped battle the flames, including from Buena Vista, Glascow, Big Island, South River, Rockbridge, Kerr Creek, Natural Bridge and Lexington.

Crews lined up at the edge of the fire to keep it from spreading to nearby homes. Chief Lawhorne says no homes were evacuated.

Crews from the U.S. Department of Forestry were doing what they call back burning--where they torch the land to make sure the fire doesn't spread any further.

"They're bringing in leaf blowers and the bulldozer that we have working and hand crews that are just working to make sure that there is a buffer between the fire and the property," said Karen Stanley, with the U.S. Department of Forestry.

Officials are still investigating how the fire started, but officials say high winds caused the fire to spread quickly.

Chief Lawhorne says they'll be out there all night and depending on the weather, they might be there for the next couple of days as well.
