From LC athletics:
LYNCHBURG, VA – The 13th-ranked Lynchburg College softball team got a big lift from senior Cassie Phillips on Senior Day as her three RBI in game two were the difference in a 4-1 victory after Lynchburg dropped game one, 4-0, to 12th-ranked Roanoke College in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference doubleheader Sunday.
Phillips drove in the first LC run of the day in the fifth inning of game two, singling home Amber Ingram who doubled and advanced to third on a groundout. Roanoke answered in the top of the sixth on an RBI single up the middle off the bat of Stephanie Clark.
Lynchburg would plate three more runs in the bottom of the frame to give the Maroons their first conference loss (13-1) as Amber Sulter pinch-hit to lead off the Hornet sixth with a hit by pitch before being removed for Melanie Tenney, who was reentering the game. One out later, Ingram reached on an error and Michaela Munday was plunked to load the bases for Phillips. The lone senior on the team came through, doubling off the wall in left-center, mere feet from a grand slam, to plate Tenney and Ingram. Kacey Clary rounded out the scoring with a sacrifice fly to plate Munday.
Hope Johnson (13-2) started game one, but went the distance for the Hornets in game two, allowing one run on four hits and two walks, while striking out two.
A second inning grand slam by Roanoke (25-6/13-1 ODAC)'s Meghan Weingard turned out to be the difference in game one. Phillips entered in the fourth inning to hold the Maroons at four, pitching three scoreless innings, but Roanoke starter, Stephanie Clark (11-1), was just as effective in the shutout.
Lynchburg (26-7/11-3 ODAC) hosts Sweet Briar College (0-18/0-12 ODAC) Wednesday in an ODAC doubleheader scheduled for 3 p.m.
