Afton, VA - VDOT kicked off its Work Zone Awareness Week in Afton Tuesday afternoon, with a somber ceremony.

They honored their fellow workers, more than 130, who've lost their lives on Virginia roads.

"We don't want to be back here again and see other names be put up on this wall," said Sean Connaughton, secretary of VA Transportation.

Zachary Peck looks just like his uncle, number 132.

"On a Sunday, that was when he got crushed by a tractor trailer," Peck recalled.

Carlos "Kent" Keen, of Buchanan County died on July 31st, when a tractor-trailer hauling gravel rear-ended his backhoe on Route 460.

He had been a dedicated VDOT employee for more than 30 years.

"At his funeral the next day, it was sad. I mean, I was balling my eyes out," said Peck.

Road crews across the country have set aside this entire week to honor road crew workers, a that's becoming more dangerous.

The Executive Director of Drive Smart VA told the crowd that the chance for a crash increase 2300 % when you text and drive.

Since the memorial wall was dedicated in September of 2004, thousands more, across the country have died.

"Our goal is to work together with V-DOT to try to improve these work zones, try to make them safe so that we don't add anymore names to the wall," said Trooper Chad Zenzen, of Virginia State Police.
