Lynchburg - Salem entered Thursday night's game at Lynchburg with a 4-and-8 record, worst in the Carolina League.  But the Red Sox sure didn't play that way against the Hillcats, beating Lynchburg 8-1 in the opener of a four-game series in Lynchburg.

Leading 2-1 in the third, Salem erupted for five big runs in the frame to break the game open. The Red Sox had nine hits for the game, Matty Johnson and Garin Cecchini led the way with two rbi's, Cecchini homered in the first, doubled in the eighth, walked twice and scored two runs.

Lynchburg loaded the bases in the sixth with just one out, but Matt Price got Will Skinner to ground into a rally-killing double play.  Price allowed just one Hillcat hit in his two-and-two-thirds innings of relief.  The 'Cats struck out five times in the final three innings.

The victory snapped a three-game losing streak for the Sox, who eclipsed their previous best offensive output of the year by scoring eight times.

William Beckwith homered in the first for Lynchburg's only run of the game.

Game Two of the series is scheduled for Friday night at 6:05, with Salem's Mike Augliera and Lynchburg's Ryan Weber the starting pitchers.
