Amherst Stays Undefeated With Win Over LCA

AMHERST – The Lancers held LCA to just five hits in a 3-1 win over Amherst native Randy Tomlin and the Bulldogs Monday night.

The win moved Amherst to 11-0 on the season. They play at Liberty Tuesday night.

"Growing up in Amherst County you know who [Tomlin] is. Two years in a row [we've been able to beat them]. Randy's just a great Amherst guy and obviously he did a lot for our county with his career in the majors and then coming back here to coach high school baseball. It means a lot to everyone around here," Amherst head coach Joey Crawford said.

The pitching trio of Hunter Floyd, Graham Crouch, and Jesse Stinnett held LCA in check all night long.

Stinnett, who has signed to play at Maryland –Eastern Shore next season, drove in all three runs for the Lancers. He was 1-2 with a sacrifice fly that scored D.A. Christian in the third inning to tie the game 1-1.

Stinnett closed the game with two strikeouts and a fly out. "I have some friends at LCA so I was trying to juice it up a little" on the mound, Stinnett said.

LCA scored its lone run in the first inning. Josh Barrick stole second. Logan Pingley's throw to second got away from Stinnett and that allowed Zach Clinton to score from third to take a 1-0 lead.

Clifton Kirkland started for LCA and gave up all three of Amherst's runs. Jeremiah Kirkland came in in relief in the 5th and did not give up a run.
