Suspicious Item Found on VMI Campus


Update: 3:30 p.m.:

VMI officials say the "all clear" was given around 11:15 a.m. Wednesday. Virginia State Police were on scene and executed a controlled explosion of the item. 

VMI officials say the item has been deemed to not be an explosive device.


Update: 9:45 a.m.:

VMI officials say Preston Library, Nichols Engineering Building and portions of Mallory Hall have been evacuated. They are asking people to stay away from the area between the admissions office and Jackson Memorial Hall, and the Parade Ground.


Lexington, VA – A suspicious item has been found near the entrance to Preston Library on the campus of VMI Wednesday morning.

The VMI community got an alert at 8:18 a.m.

Right now Letcher Avenue between Maury-Brooke and JM Hall is closed.

Please avoid the area.

Preston Library is also closed.

Police are on the scene and we have a crew on the way.

We will bring you more information as we get it.
