Tick Season: Things You Need to Know

Posted:

Bedford Co., VA - They are quiet, quick and attack without warning. It is tick season. And they are ready to sink their teeth into you.

They are the predators, you are the pray. And ticks have no problem going after what they want. Chances are you or someone you know has been bitten by a tick. That includes Doctor Thomas Epps of Forest Family Physicians.

"I felt like I had an itching spot on the back," said Dr. Epps.

The tick was embedded in his skin. If this happens to you, do not be discouraged if you cannot get the entire thing out.

"It's almost impossible to get all the tick out. You are going to get an allergic reaction around the bite," said Epps.

The key from here is getting it checked out immediately to prevent disease. If you are bitten by a deer tick...

"It takes one to two days for you to get Lyme Disease from that," said Epps.

It happens even faster with dog ticks.

"Those ticks need to come out within four hours of being bit," said Epps.

The three most common diseases from dog and deer ticks are: Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, Lyme Disease, and Ehrlichiosis.

"All three of them can kill," said Epps.

Even one local school is going above and beyond. They're sending the tick home with the parents if a student is bitten. They say they are doing this so the parent has a record of what type of tick bit their kid.
