A Tulsa area high school was named the best in Oklahoma by a news magazine in their study of the nation's education system.

Booker T. Washington was chosen as the best high school in Oklahoma by U.S. News & World Report in their ranking of national and state schools. The Tulsa school also was listed as 325th in the country.

Several factors determined the magazine's selection of Booker T. Washington, among them being the opportunity for students to take Advanced Placement coursework and exams and having 61 percent minority enrollment. Another deciding factor was the school's 41 percent male and 51 percent female student body makeup, according to the magazine.

The north Tulsa high school was established back in 1913 and has been the "comprehensive magnet school since 1973." The school is one of 11 in the TPS and boasts championships in football, basketball and an academic team, according to its website.

The magazine listed on their website that Booker T. Washington had a 97 percent English proficiency rating and 86 percent in Algebra proficiency. The only other school listed in the district was Dove Science Academy with an 11 rating.

According to the magazine, factors contributing to the success of Oklahoma schools included the flexibility of No Child Left Behind mandates and end of instruction tests in five sections.

More information about the study can be found on their website.
