Family, Friends of Travis "Duck" Daniel React to Their Loss

CAMPBELL CO, VA - Friends say a Concord man shot at a party over the weekend died trying to protect others.

Investigators say Travis "Duck" Daniel was shot once in the abdomen after an argument between two groups of people.

The suspect, Joshua Graves, is 23 and from Gladys. He remains at the Campbell County jail, without bond after a bond hearing Monday afternoon.

The victim's mother tries not to think about the alleged shooter. She's focusing on her son's life instead.

"A lot of people use the metaphorical statement, give the shirt off your back. But, there's plenty of people in this group that have sweatshirts of his, jackets of his. He literally would give you the shirt off his back," Branson Addison said.

Daniel graduated from Rustburg High School, loved NASCAR and was a die-hard Hokies fan.

Saturday morning, Branson Addison left a birthday party and his lifelong friend, just minutes before investigators say a petty argument outside escalated.

"My understanding is that the gun had been pulled on somebody else and that he was looking out for them pretty much," Addison said.

"The victim was shot in the upper torso, lower part of the chest," said Investigator Billy Crowe.

Daniel's mom says her son went quickly.

Graves was arrested at his home a few hours later, thanks to dozens of eyewitnesses.

"I have no earthly idea who he was, why he was around our group," Addison continued. "People put titles of best friend, great friend, he was a brother to me."

Addison always pictured himself standing next to Duck at his wedding,

He never imagined it would end like this.

"I'm honored to be one of his pallbearers," Addison said.

The family invites the public to come to Daniels' memorial service Tuesday and funeral Wednesday.
