Police Following Leads on Liggates Road Rape

Lynchburg, VA - Lynchburg police say they're still following leads after a woman was reportedly raped inside her own home by a stranger.

It happened almost exactly two months ago on the 1300 block of Liggates Road.

The police department says this is still a very active investigation. Right now, the hold up is with the state crime lab. Captain Ryan Zuidema said it's still processing evidence, looking for things like hair fibers and possible DNA -- hoping for a hit on the DNA database.

Police released a composite sketch of the suspect shortly after the rape was reported on March 4. The victim told them a man wearing a gold or yellow hooded sweatshirt walked into an unlocked home, beat up and raped her. He reportedly ran out the back door towards St. Cloud Avenue and hasn't been seen since.

Several neighbors have considered arming themselves and taken self defense classes.

"We've just been a little more cautious about making sure the doors are locked, watching who's in the neighborhood, watching out for our neighbors," said Linda Timmons, who lives on Liggates Road.

"We just ask that they continue to be vigilant and pay attention to their surroundings. Obviously if they see anything out of the ordinary or anybody in the neighborhood that doesn't belong there, to contact us so that we can try to identify them," said Captain Ryan Zuidema.

It can take up to six months to get evidence back from the state crime lab.

The police department held a neighborhood watch meeting a few weeks ago. People who attended said it had the largest turnout they'd ever seen.
