Bedford Co. Schools Get New Driver's Ed Cars

Posted:

Bedford Co., VA - A group that promotes teen driving safety is helping save the driver's education program in Bedford County schools.

BedCo Cares used grant money to help pay for two 2011 Dodge Avengers. The group split the $30,000 cost with the school system.

The cars come with modern features and will be used for training on actual roads. This type of training is crucial in the rural county, where several teens have died in crashes in recent years.

"The first group that I drove on the road for their road test, I said 'Where do you live?'.  I actually let them drive me to their house and back," said Shelia Turpin, Driver's Education Coordinator at Liberty High School. "Statistics tell us that most accidents occur near home, so I wanted them to be familiar with those roads as much as possible."

The cars are at the bus garage right now, where mechanics will outfit them with passenger side brakes for the instructor.
