Area Farmers Fear Frost May Harm Their Crop Monday Night

Lynchburg, VA - Farmers in our area have their fingers crossed that it doesn't frost early Tuesday Morning.

At Johnson's Orchard in Bedford County, owners are worried the frost could kill some of their crop.

Danny Johnson is used to fighting off frost.

"That is its most fragile stage right there. During the bloom. I mean a freeze will get and even a hot blast will kill a blossom too," Johnson said.

In past years, Johnson says he burned brush to prevent it.

"I burned all the hay I had one year. It's hard to move the temperature over one and a half degrees. But all it takes is moving it a little bit and you can save a crop of fruit," Johnson said.

Johnson has seen the damage frost can do. On Monday, he wasn't preparing the brush pile or covering any plants.

Johnson is a bit of a skeptic.

"It would surprise me if we get any frost. I just don't think we're going to get it," Johnson said. "The latest that we've ever had frost on this farm was the 11th of May."

The late frost was back in the 1960's. So, for Johnson, it's business as usual. He spent the day spraying his crop with insecticide.

"If it does frost we may lose a few of the blooms. But I don't think. It's going to have to stay cold and pretty doggone good while to kill some of those big fruits there," Johnson said.

If you want to be safe, it may be a good idea to cover your plants tonight or bring them in if you can if you want to keep them.
