Former Franklin Co. School Board Chairman Explains Resignation

Rocky Mount, VA - The chairman of the Franklin County school board abruptly quit after a controversial vote at the school board meeting Monday Night.

Edward (Ed) Jamison is against a plan that cuts the middle school sports program.

The county schools are facing a $1.5 million shortfall.

"It was only $75,000 to replace middle school sports. We could have found that money somewhere," said Edward Jamison, who until Monday night, was the chairman of the Franklin County School Board.

"I made the comment that if we were going to choose one group over another, it would be my last act and I stuck to that," Jamison said.

Jamison resigned after the board voted to reinstate funding for 22 slots to send students to the regional governor's school in Roanoke, while still cutting middle school sports, a decision that impacts more than 260 kids.

"If you were going to bring one back, you should have brought the other back," Jamison said.

Amanda Scott is worried the board will cut the intervention specialist position she says has helped her first grade son succeed both in class and on the soccer field.

"It was a little disappointing to me, as a parent, I think to see the chairman of the board actually resign right in the middle of the meeting," Scott said. "Everybody's on the same team. I think we're directing our anger and our frustration in the wrong area."

"I don't think that sends a good message to students. That things aren't going your way, so you're just going to give up."

"There is a lot of work to be done and I feel I can get more done on this side, than I could the other," said Jamison.

Jamison says he wants to be an advocate for both county and the school system. He says he might have future political aspirations.
