Blacksburg, VA - Storm chasers from Virginia Tech were in Oklahoma Monday as that deadly tornado smashed into an Oklahoma City suburb.
They were tracking a different storm just 35 miles away.
The Hokie Storm Chasers have been tracking storms from Kansas to Texas over the past week. The 14 person team, conducting research in "Tornado Alley, is made up of students, professors and volunteers.
The team was just south of Oklahoma City when that twister hit Moore.
"They had experienced that already so to hear the news come out of Oklahoma City was a gut check for them all to understand that this is what can happen when the power of Mother Nature and human civilization interact with each other," said Hokie Storm Chaser Chris White
The team, which also chased the tornado that recently hit Wichita, is currently on its way to Texas.
