Lynchburg, VA - A judge has granted bond for a man charged with abusing a 9-month-old child.

Matthew Roach, charged with child abuse and malicious wounding, was granted $25,000 Wednesday.

Amherst County prosecutors claim his girlfriend's daughter was taken to the hospital earlier this month for fussiness and swelling on her upper arm.

Workers discovered the infant had a total of 16 bone fractures-  including a broken arm, fingers, ribs, hip and tibia.

Roach admitted to investigators he bit the child in the arm while playing with her.

He also says he was a walk-on on the Liberty University football team and played for two years. But LU officials say there's no record of him on the team's roster.

His parents testified they'd never seen him become violent.

The infant's mother, Savanna Burks, has also been charged.
