Emergency Shelter Drill in Lexington

Lexington, VA - A three-day emergency drill is being held at locations all over Virginia to make sure we're ready for the upcoming hurricane season.

Wednesday in Lexington, actors played the roles of people forced from their homes after an earthquake hit Central Virginia.

A pretend shelter was set up at Virginia Military Institute.

VMI has been identified as one place that could take in evacuees after an actual emergency.

"This is the first time we've done two at the same time. One at VMI and one in Newport News at Christopher Newport University. We're also opening up a number of pet shelters at the same time. We're really trying to stretch our capabilities and really learn how can we manage all those activities at the same time," said Bob Spieldenner with the Virginia Department of Emergency Management.

An operations center drill was held Tuesday in Richmond, and the Roanoke Civic Center will host a pet shelter drill Thursday.
