Second Annual Hill City Classic Soap Box Derby Rolls On in Lynchburg

Lynchburg, VA - A group of people in Lynchburg are bringing back an old tradition. Saturday was the second annual Hill City Classic Soap Box Derby.

Twenty-two kids raced down the hill at Falwell Airport in Lynchburg.

Kids anywhere from seven years old to 17 competed, and each had to put the cars together themselves.

Each car was sponsored by a local organization or company.

Race organizers say soap box racing used to be huge in Lynchburg in the 1950s and 1960s.

Now that the tradition has been revived, the race director says they hope to get more kids involved.

"Really for a kid, there's nothing better than taking a car you built, you know how it works...and going 30 plus miles an hour down a hill," said Race Director Steve Smallshaw.

Two winners from Saturday's race will go to the national championship in Ohio.
