9-1-1 Call Released in Madison Heights House Fire

Posted:

Madison Heights, VA - Fire investigators say we may never know what caused Sunday's fire that destroyed a Madison Heights home on Kings Road because of so much damage.

Sandra Pugh was taking a nap after Sunday morning church when she woke up to bright orange flames towering over trees that separate her property from her neighbor's next door.

By the time Pugh got outside. All she could do was watch as flames tore through the home next door, leaving children's toys, scrap booking supplies, and family photos unrecognizable.

"It scared the bejeebies out of me. I thought with the wind blowing, please god don't let it come this way," Pugh recalled.

Pugh's property was spared and so were the lives of her neighbors.

Fire officials say a mother and her three-year-old boy managed to escape just minutes before calling 9-1-1 for help.

"Is everybody out of the house?" a dispatcher asks the caller on the other line.

"Yes, ma'am we are. Please, hurry!" added the caller.

It's the third house fire and the fourth structure fire in Amherst County in the last 30 days. Fire officials say none appear to be related, but most have one thing in common: no insurance, no way to replace what was lost.

For Pugh it's a reality that hits close.

"It's scary. It's really scary 'cause my husband lost his business in a fire," Pugh added.

Sunday's fire displaced a total of five people. The red cross is helping them in the meantime.

There's also no word yet on whether the family's cat was able to escape the flames.
