Miles Charged With First Degree Murder in Slocum's Death

Lynchburg, VA - Lynchburg police have arrested the son-in-law of an 86-year-old woman found murdered inside her home last December.

Scott Miles is charged with first degree murder in the death of Lynda Slocum.

Miles appeared at Lynchburg Circuit Court Tuesday morning where a judge appointed a local attorney to represent him.

A grand jury indicted Miles Monday for the first-degree murder of his mother-in-law, months after her body was discovered slumped over inside her own home.

Police vowed to leave no stone unturned to bring Lynda Slocum's killer to justice.

Six months after Slocum was found in her Ravenwood Drive home, detectives drove to Hopewell, Virginia to arrest Scott Miles, estranged son-in-law, for murder.

"Our investigators have been very diligent about solving this homicide," said investigator Whit Clark.

Early on, detectives identified Miles as a person of interest, but waited for physical evidence to come back from the state crime lab.

According to search warrants, cell phone records, and surveillance video at a Lynchburg gas station indicate Miles was in the area one day before Slocum's body was discovered.

Warrants also indicate investigators went to Miles's mother's home looking for blood, fibers, hairs, and clothing that may have trace evidence.

"I hope that it will bring peace of mind to the Lynchburg community," Clark said.

In the weeks after Slocum's death, fear in the middle-class neighborhood prompted police to beef up patrols and hold a home security meeting where dozens turned out.

"This shouldn't be happening here. This shouldn't be happening here," said Ken Vosper.

At Westminster Presbyterian Church, friends never lost hope an arrest would be made.

It's been devastating, and very difficult for us to take in," said fellow church member Donna Goldenberg.

"She was a beautiful woman, on the inside, a caregiver and we'll always remember her," said Slocum's friend Holcombe Hughes.

Scott Miles is being held in Lynchburg Regional Jail without bond. His next court date is scheduled for July 1. Our calls to his court-appointed attorney have not yet been returned.
