Lynchburg Police Carry Torch for Special Olympics Fundraiser

Lynchburg, VA - You may have seen Lynchburg Police Officers running through Lynchburg Wednesday carrying some precious cargo.

The officers were carrying a torch as a part of the Virginia Law Enforcement Torch Run, a fundraiser for the Virginia Special Olympics.

The torch run started near Bristol and will wind up in Richmond this weekend, to help kick off the state Special Olympics summer games.

Law enforcement officers raised money all year for the event. This year they set a record, raising more than $1 million.

"An entire years' worth of work built up to $1 million for the first time, we're very excited about that; a lot of the officers are, and it just rejuvenates them for the next year, and hopefully achieving more and getting more money" said Matt Camire, Director of Development for this region of the Virginia Special Olympics.

More than 2,000 officers participated in the run statewide.
