PULASKI - Amherst County had come from behind all season long but their magic ended Saturday against Sherando. The Lancers lost 4-2 in the VHSL Group AA state semifinals.
Amherst finished one of its best seasons with a 25-1 record.
After giving up a 1-0 lead in the first inning, Shernando scored three straight over the next four innings to stake itself to a 3-1 lead and finished with a 4-2 victory over previously unbeaten Amherst County.
DA Christian led off the game for Amherst with a single and came in to score on an RBI single by Jesse Stinnett.
Reid Enstminger, who earned the victory on the mound for Shernando, tied the game in the second coming in to score after doubling to open the inning. Jeb Brown knocked him in with a base hit.
Shernando took the lead for good in the fourth. John Bentley singled and then scored on another RBI single by Brown. Jacob Carney's solo home run pushed the score to 3-1 in the fifth.
Floyd Hunter forced home a run in the sixth for Amherst, but it was not enough. Shernando added an insurance run in the seventh for the final margin. Stinnett took the loss for Amherst.
Shernando advances to its first-ever state title game.
