LYNCHBURG - Cameron Silverman woke up with a head cold and Hunter Koontz had leg cramps. Apparently tennis players would rather have a cold because Silverman won Sunday's CVITT title in straight sets 6-2, 6-3.
Silverman, who plays for Elon, said it was his first appearance in the tournament and plans to return.
After waking up congested, he made a quick trip to the drug store to clear up his head, and then used a powerful serve and advantageous drop shots to beat Koontz, who plays for Virginia Tech.
Women's Open Singles: Lindsey Hardenbergh def. Kateryna Yergina 6-2, 6-2
Men's Open Doubles: Jenkins - Shabaz def. Gooch - Silverman 3-6, 6-4, 6-3
