ABC 13 Weather Team: No Derecho Thursday, Storms Still Possible

Posted:

Lynchburg, VA – Rumors about our area being hit by another derecho have been swirling all around network T.V. and online for days, but the ABC 13 Weather Team says we are not going to see a repeat of last June.

Still, a big storm system is headed our way for Thursday, even though the system will not be another derecho.

All of the talk about the severe weather has folks at a Lynchburg area car wash and elsewhere remembering June 29, 2012.

Many of our roads were blocked by trees, power lines, and debris during the derecho last June. The clean-up took weeks and went on around the clock in unbearable heat.

Tweets and messages from national network meteorologists like ABC weatherman Sam Champion have many fearing a part two to our derecho in Central Virginia.

"I don't not believe it," Stephanie Mayberry said.

Mayberry remembers the storm like it was yesterday, though.

"My windows were down, so I was scared to go outside to roll my windows up. It was so strong. I didn't want to blow away," Mayberry said.

Once the derecho blew over, Mayberry was out of her car-washing job for a while. They had no power.

"We were out of work for five days," Mayberry said.

Being out of work is the last thing Becky Kirk wants to hear. She and her husband just opened an ice cream truck in Boonsboro. It's tough to make ice-cream when the power goes out.

Kirk has a plan, however.

"We would have to bring in a generator to keep all of the refrigerators running, and hopefully they would be strong enough to run the ice-cream machines as well," Kirk said.

The ABC 13 Weather Team does not expect a derecho, but, scattered wind damage is possible from thunderstorms.

Around town, people are hoping for the best.

"I guess I'm an optimist so I'm hoping it's not as bad as the last one," Kirk said.
