Montgomery Co., VA - All three occupants of a Chevrolet Blazer were seriously injured on I-81 Saturday, after the driver fell asleep behind the wheel, flipping the vehicle several times before it caught fire Saturday afternoon, state police say.

According to Trooper Todd Shrewsbury, the driver of a 1999 Chevrolet Blazer lost control of the vehicle when they fell asleep near mile marker 114.9 southbound.

Upon awakening, the driver lost control of the vehicle on the right side of the interstate, over-corrected, and then flipped a total of five to six times on the left side of the road.

The Chevrolet Blazer then caught fire near the engine of the vehicle, but truckers nearby helped extinguish the blaze with their on-board fire extinguishers, according to state police.

All three passengers sustained serious injuries and were transported to the the New River Valley Medical Center. Though serious, their injuries were not believed to be life-threatening, Trooper Shrewsbury said.

The accident happened around 2:25 p.m.

All three victims were wearing their safety belts, Shrewsbury added.

Drugs and alcohol were not a factor in the crash, according to State Police.
