Roanoke City Schools Launches New Summer Ed Program

Roanoke, VA - Roanoke City Schools have taken summer school to a new level.

More than 2,600 students are taking advantage of RCPS+, a program that launched on Monday.

The six week voluntary program focuses heavily on reading, writing and math. The program also incorporates a heavy dose of computer training.

District leaders found that students without computers at home didn't do as well on the SOLs as kids who did have computers because now the SOLs are all online.

"It's not a drill and kill curriculum. It's an enrichment curriculum that is modeled after our gifted education program. And so it is a rare opportunity just to soar," said district superintendent Dr. Rita Bishop.

The program is free for rising first graders through rising 9th graders.

Organizers say 127 of the district's top-instructors are teaching the program.
