Salem, VA - After several days of rain, it only took an evening downpour from a thunderstorm Wednesday to flood roads and low spots in the Salem area.

Late in the afternoon Wednesday, storms began to develop north of the Roanoke Valley, and started to move south.

Once the storms entered Roanoke County, the rainfall rates increased. Some storms were dropping between one to three inches of rain in just one hour, according to radar estimates.

Some of the heaviest rain fell over urban areas of the Roanoke Valley. In Salem, the water simply had no where to go, running off to produce flash flooding along many roads and low spots.

One ABC 13 viewer sent in a picture of 419 with a least several inches of water covering the roadway.

High winds also damaged three tents at the Salem Civic Center just before 7 p.m., according to the National Weather Service in Blacksburg. No one was injured.

Other storms dropped hail up to 1" in diameter in Montgomery County.

The severe weather was a result of leftover moisture from recent rains. Drier air moving in from the north wasn't quite able to completely clear the unsettled weather out of the area. As the sun warmed the air during the day, storms blossomed and followed the mountain ridges during the day.

Clouds may start the day Thursday, but they should clear for sunshine by afternoon.
