Lynchburg - The Frederick Keys snapped a 1-all tie with four runs in the third and never looked back as they won the opener of a three-game series in Lynchburg 8-3.
Michael Ohlman's three-run homer in the third was the big blow as Frederick chased Hillcats starter Blaine Sims after five innings. Sims gave up seven runs and nine hits as he dropped his fifth straight start since joining the Hillcats' rotation in early June.
The Hillcats and Keys played in front of a capacity July 4th crowd of 5,962 fans. Frederick added solo runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings to run its lead to 8-1.
Kyle Kubitza's double in the sixth drove in the first of two runs as Lynchburg pulled within 8-3. But that's as close as the Hillcats got.
The loss drops Lynchburg to 3-and-9 in the second half. Same teams play Friday night at 7:05 in Lynchburg.
