UPDATE: Storm and Flooding Chances Increase by Thursday

Posted:

Lynchburg, VA - Hit or miss shower and storms return to the forecast for some areas Tuesday afternoon, with better chances of heavier rain and storms by Thursday.

The active weather pattern returns with the possibility of flash flooding again Thursday with the approach of a cold front. The ground is so saturated, that less than an inch of rain in places like Montgomery County in under an hour will cause flooding.

Wednesday through Friday look the most unsettled. There will be intervals of clouds and sun, along with more scattered showers and thunderstorms. The best chance for storms Wednesday is in the New River Valley.

Thursday and Friday, the Roanoke, Lynchburg, and Southside areas have the highest chance of thunderstorms. Downpours are certainly possible in some of the showers and storms by late week, which could lead to flash flooding.

This weekend turns somewhat cooler and thundershower chances decrease somewhat, but are still in the forecast.

We are also watching Tropical Storm Chantal in the Atlantic Ocean. The storm is forecast to be near Florida by the weekend, possibly influencing weekend beach plans along the east coast. Other forecast models put Chantal in the Gulf of Mexico or inland over the Southeast U.S. later this weekend into early next week. Depending on the exact track of Chantal, tropical moisture could find it's way to our area, especially if the storm turns west into the gulf for the weekend.
