Rocky Mount Man Faces a Slew of Charges Following Hit and Run with N.C. Deputy

Caswell Co., NC – The Sheriff's office in Caswell County, North Carolina says a Rocky Mount, VA man hit a deputy's patrol car, leading a deputy on a high speed chase at speeds over 100 mph over the weekend.

According to investigators, Deputy K.T. Underwood was traveling North on Highway 86 around 2:13 a.m. Sunday when an oncoming vehicle crossed the center line, causing the Deputy to run off the right shoulder of the road. The vehicle hit the Deputy's car.

Underwood was able to gain control of his patrol unit and turned around to stop the suspect that hit him, officials say.

The suspect in the vehicle sped away at speeds over 100 mph. As the vehicle tried to turn onto Park Springs Road where it struck the median, finally coming to a stop, according to the Sheriff's Office.

The driver of the vehicle was identified as Eli Roblero Morales, 27, of Rocky Mount, VA.

Morales has been charged with Felony Speed to Elude, Felony Assault with Deadly Weapon on a Government Official, Injury to Personal Property, having an open container of alcohol, driving with no operator's license, driving left of the center line, leaving the scene of an accident, and driving while impaired.

Morales was taken into custody and placed in the Caswell County Detention Facility under a $49,000 secured bond. His court date is set for July 10.

No one was injured during the incident. The damage to the patrol vehicle will exceed $1000, the sheriff's department says.
