Federal Judge Blocks Morva's Execution

Posted:

Montgomery Co., VA - A federal judge has blocked the scheduled execution of William Morva in order for his appeals to continue.

Morva's execution had been set for August 15 after his state appeals were exhausted in April.

Inmates, however, are guaranteed federal appeals.

Morva was convicted for the 2006 murders of hospital security guard Derrick McFarland and Montgomery County Sheriff's Office Corporal Eric Sutphin.

Morva was in jail for attempted robbery charges when he was taken to a Blacksburg hospital for treatment of an injury. He overpowered a deputy, took his gun and shot McFarland.

Then, Morva shot Sutphin during a manhunt that closed down Virginia Tech's campus on the first day of classes.
