Roanoke City Urges Motorists to Stay Away from Flooded Roads

Roanoke, VA – Severe flash flooding has closed a number of roads in Roanoke City. Emergency crews in the city are asking people to avoid any roads covered with water.

The following roads have been particularly hard hit and may still have moving floodwater over them:

• Orange Avenue

• Hollins Road

• Plantation Road

• Williamson Road, north of Chatham Street

• Cover Road

• Hershberger Road

• Melrose Corridor in Northwest

In a news release, Roanoke City says " Residents are reminded to never drive into flooded areas or try to walk, swim, or drive through water in streets. If you come upon flood waters, stop, turn around, and go another way.

If flood waters rise around your car, abandon the car and move to higher ground if you can do so safely; you and your vehicle can be swept away as flood waters rise. Citizens are encouraged to stay off the streets and avoid driving when flooding has occurred, unless absolutely necessary."
