Danville Area YMCA Pushing Water Safety After James River Drowning

Posted:

Danville,VA -The recent drowning in the James River on Monday has the Danville YMCA pushing water safety.

The Danville YMCA offers swimming lessons every day of the week that not only teach people how to swim, but also teach water safety skills.

The Y says their biggest water safety tips for children is to never swim alone. They also say it's important to only swim in an area where there is a lifeguard on duty. Children and inexperienced swimmers should also wear flotation devices.

"Children they think they can swim and they can't, they just jump in with no adult supervision," said Cord Cothren, Aquatics Coordinator at the Danville Area YMCA.  "We've seen it all year long, in the papers, even nationally where children are drowning left and right and, we want to stop that and not have any incidents in Danville and Pittsylvania County."
