Heavy Showers Developing, Flash Flood Watch in Effect Overnight Thursday

Posted:

Update 4 p.m.:

Heavy showers and storms are developing across the Heart of Virginia this evening. While the severe threat remains low, these storms are slow-movers that contain tropical downpours.

Since there is not a lot of steering wind and the air is so rich with moisture, storms will have the tendency to sit over the same areas for extended periods of time, all the while producing very high rainfall rates. This could lead to isolated flash flooding this evening and tonight.

A Flash Flood Watch is in effect for the entire area through overnight. Any storms that develop could contain torrential downpours, which could lead to flash flooding. If you live near creeks and rivers keep an eye on water levels. If you drive up to a water covered roadway... turn around don't drown!

Thursday Morning

A Flash Flood Watch is in effect for the entire area through tonight. Any storms that develop could contain torrential downpours, which could lead to flash flooding. If you live near creeks and rivers keep an eye on water levels. If you drive up to a water covered roadway... turn around don't drown!

Today a cool front moves through bringing plenty of clouds and scattered showers and thunderstorms. Some breaks of sunshine will warm afternoon temperatures in the mid 80s.

A break in the rain comes tomorrow and this weekend, as some drier air moves in from the west. An isolated shower cannot be ruled out across Southside Virginia Saturday or Sunday. For most of us the weekend is looking increasingly dry, with a noticeable drop in humidity. Highs in the low to mid 80s. Early next week hit or miss showers and thunderstorms make a return to the region.
