Forbes Ranks Tulsa Number 1 City for Young Entrepreneurs

Posted: Updated:

As of late, the name of the game in Tulsa is 'growth.' Look no further than the Brady Arts District. The area has seen an explosion of growth in recent years, helped along, in large part, by young business owners.

"It's really nice that the work that, collectively, the community's been doing in entrepreneurship is being recognized on a national level," said Brian Paschal. That recognition is by Forbes Magazine, naming Tulsa as the number one spot in the country for young entrepreneurs. For someone like Paschal, the city's ranking comes as no surprise. "There's a lot of ways to engage and the cost of doing business is so cheap and the quality of life is great. So, when you combine a low cost of living with a high quality of life -- you know, being centrally located is great in terms of doing business. I think it's a combination of all of those."

Paschal is executive director of The Forge, a collaboration of several young Tulsa entrepreneurs, meant to cultivate ideas and growth.

"The volunteers thought, 'What better way than to literally help support start-up companies," Paschal said.

With the project now in its third year, Paschal says the success of The Forge proves what Tulsa entrepreneurs are made of.

"When you have a critical mass of smart people working on projects, I think good things come of that," he added.

The magazine's ranking is a bright spot for a city, already on the upswing and people like Paschal hope that it is only the beginning. "My hope is that it continues to grow -- that our incubator of a half a dozen will spur other incubators around town and, you know, I'm hopeful and optimistic and really want to see the community grow," Paschal said.

The magazine considered factors such as loan data, cost of living, and business activity when ranking the cities.

Oklahoma City also ranked near the top, coming in at number five on the list.
