Mommy Monday: Holding Off to Cut the Cord

Posted:

In tonight's Mommy Monday -- a lot of people joke about not being about to "cut the cord" to their children.

But some new research shows maybe there is something to that.

Normally, after your baby is born, the cord is cut.

But a new study says you may want to hold off.

Researchers say delaying the clamping of the cord for up to three minutes raises iron levels in newborns' blood.

That's an effect they say can last for months.

Researchers found that delayed cord-clamping allowed more time for the transfer of fetal blood from the mother's placenta.

That means up to 60 percent more red blood cells for the newborn.

The only negative side effect?

It could raise the risk of your baby getting jaundice.
