Roanoke City Council Approves Raise

Posted:

Roanoke, VA - Roanoke city council has made their raises official in a split vote that had raised eyebrows as early proposals considered raises of more than 28-percent.

Council voted 4-3 to uphold an earlier vote that will see 10%raises go into affect.

The second reading of the vote was needed because of how close it was.

Some against the raises say they were disappointed more citizens didn't come out to voice their concerns considering city employees received just a 3%raise.

"I don't understand where they are at. I mean this bothers me so much is that I'm standing here pretty much alone by myself and it's wrong. To me it's wrong. What's right is right and what's wrong is wrong," said William Drewery who opposes the raises.

The raises will cause council salaries to go up from just over $15,500 to more than $17,100.

The mayor's salary will go up from $20,000 to $22,000 a year.

The raise goes into affect next July.
