UPDATE: Storms Approach as Heat Index Values Touch 100

Lynchburg, VA - Strong July sun combined with high levels of humidity are making it difficult for many to work outside Tuesday afternoon. Never underestimate the dangers of heat.

Temperatures Tuesday have been hot enough to even get a few heavy thunderstorms going across the area. For the latest radar, click here. Some of the storms will contain heavy downpours.

When it gets hot, your body tries to cool you off by sweating. When the sweat evaporates, it actually takes heat away from your skin. Think of it as your natural cooling system.

When it's humid outside, however, your sweat can't evaporate as easy, causing you and your body to feel even hotter than the actual air temperature - that's where the heat index value comes from.

There may be an isolated storm or two into the rest of the week, but the hot weather looks to stick around for several more days.

For the latest on the forecast, head over to the ABC 13 Weather Center.
