Dog Days of Summer: Outdoor Summer Camps Roast

Appomattox, VA - It is hot outside, especially for those taking part in summer camps.

ABC 13 stopped by the 4-H camp at Holiday Lake in Appomattox to see how their kids are handling it.

You might call them the dog days of summer. But for 7th grader Meredith Stotsky, H-O-T spells frustration.

"The heat brings out the bad side in me. Cause I'm outside all day," said Stotsky. "It's like 90 to 100 degrees out here and it's hot and I get mad."

Around 230 students are in the thick of the heat. Rising 9th grader Shemar Williams had enough of the heat so he joined Dhomonique Ricks for a water break. Williams has come to 4-H camp for the past six years and says this is the hottest it has ever been.

"Usually it's hot, but not as humid. And you can feel it in the air, and it's all thick and I'm sweating all the time," said Williams.

4-H Summer Camp Coordinator Brielle DeMatteo says several water stations are set up for kids. There is also a big push to wear sunblock.

"We don't want to send home lobsters at the end of the week," said DeMatteo.

Just a reminder; drink lots of fluids to stay hydrated in this heat.
