Breeding Competition Coming to Chatham

Posted:

Chatham, VA - The cows are coming to Chatham. The Virginia Angus Association Breeder's Show is moving from Harrisonburg to the Olde Dominion Agricultural Complex this year.

A couple of kids from our area are hoping to take the top prize in the junior breeder competitions.

For the junior breeders, showing and handling animals is an art.

"I started out when I was 8-years-old showing my lamb and my dad helped me break it and everything. Now, I kind of caught on to learning from him and now I'm teaching my sister how to handle them," breeder Adam Moore said.

Adam and Holly Moore and their cousin Nathan Pennell have been working with animals for years on family farms and with the Pittsylvania County 4H program. They're hoping to show off their cows at the Ag complex.

"I'm hoping they act just like they act at home," Moore said.

This year, the highly anticipated show will be a combination of two annual events: the breeder show and the 2013 cattle industry field day.

This is the first time either of the events have been held in Chatham.

Extension agent Jamie Stowe says this is the first time a statewide event has been held at the venue, which opened in 2011.

"It's a tremendous opportunity for the ag complex to showcase all that it has to offer," Stowe said.

Stowe says the event will have a little something for everyone.

"We'll have tractor displays, equipment displays...we're actually going to have a meat cutting demonstration and cooking demonstration," Stowe said.

The junior handlers say they say they know animals can be unpredictable, but they're hoping these guys will help them take home the championship.

"They've done good so far and hopefully they carry on to the show," Moore said.

Organizers are expecting a big turnout. The event is open to the public and will be held on July 27 and July 28 at the Olde Dominion Agricultural Complex in Chatham.

Admission is free.
