Auburn's Gus Malzhan says quarterback is top priority

Posted: Updated:

Gus Malzahn has coached a different starting quarterback in each of the last seven seasons.

Deciding which player will continue that trend is the top priority going into August practice. Malzhan took his turn at the mic at SEC Media Days and said he's very uncomfortable not knowing who the starting quarterback will be.

"We've got a lot of questions that need to be answered," Malzahn said. "Not just the quarterback, but that's the most important one."

Kiehl Frazier, Jonathan Wallace, Nick Marshall and Jeremy Johnson will compete to be starting quarterback when Auburn begins fall practice on August 2.

Frazier and Wallace each started multiple games for Auburn last season and worked with the new coaching staff in spring practice.

Marshall played quarterback at Garden City Community College in Kansas last season.

Johnson was named Alabama's Mr. Football at Carver High School in Montgomery.

"We've got the four guys, and we're going into this thing with a very open mind," Malzahn said. "Whoever give us the best chance to win, and once me and Rhett (Lashlee) are 110 percent sure we've got him, we'll name him."

Auburn opens the season at home against Washington State on August 31.
