Appomattox Beats Brookneal 2-0 for Angels State Title

Posted:

Madison Heights - After dropping its first game in the Angels State Tournament to Brookneal Tuesday night, Appomattox returned the favor Wednesday night, beating Brookneal 2-0 to win the state championship and earn a berth to next week's World Series in Mississippi.

The game was scoreless until the fourth when Leah Caldwell's ground out to first plated Skylar Sams to give Appomattox a 1-0 lead.

Brookneal had runners at first and second, nobody out, in the bottom of the frame but Caldwell got a strikeout, then Appomattox turned a double play to get out of the inning.

Appomattox scored once more in the fifth for the 2-0 final, Appomattox advances to next Friday's World Series in Mississippi.

Appomattox pitcher Leah Caldwell said "It got me really nervous at some points.  It was like could I do that, or could I put it in where they asked me to put it.  It was kind of nerve-racking."

Question - "But you came through.  How proud of yourself are you right now?"

Caldwell said "Really."

Appomattox Head Coach Jennifer Hackett said "Oh they are so excited, and a lot of them are crying because they're so happy and just overwhelmed.  They're just joyful."

Angels Assistant Coach Jeremy Marcum said "Tight-knit group and they came together tonight to pull it out.  So we're going to Mississippi and they're very excited."
