Bus drivers meet with AEA about Hoover City Schools

HOOVER - AL -

Carol Humphrey Speakman has had a rough two years.

"My husband passed away two years ago," she said. "Do you know how hard this is on me?"

She's doing everything she can to make ends meet.

"I'm doing the best I can to work two jobs and take care of grand kids and everything," she said.

One of those jobs is being a bus driver for Hoover City Schools. She's coming up on 25 years of service. But now, instead of retirement, she's looking for another job.

"Losing a job that I'm looking for retirement and everything," she said. "No, I'm not looking forward to losing my job."

She's one of about 100 bus drivers who will be out of a job in 2014, leaving almost 6,000 students at Hoover City Schools without bus transportation.

"That is the reason that parents and families are so very, very concerned," Dana Clement said.

Clement is with the Alabama Education Association.

She urges everyone to call Hoover board members, council members and the mayor, to hopefully overturn the decision.

"There is time to reverse the decision," she said. "Nothing has been done that can't be undone at this point."

Speakman and dozens of other bus drivers met at the Holiday Inn off Highway 150, Tuesday, to discuss the matter.

Many bus drivers say they still have questions regarding things like retirement and benefits. Clement says these employees are more than bus drivers...they are people who take pride in their communities.

"They're loyal, they care about the students," she said. "They care about the families and they care about Hoover City Schools."
