High School Girls Learn Engineering at Sweet Briar Camp

Posted:

Amherst Co., VA- A group of high school girls put their skills and knowledge to the test Thursday at Sweet Briar College. It's part of a week-long engineering camp sponsored by Areva to help young women explore what the field has to offer.

Thursday the rookie engineers were finishing up their mechatronic lock and dam systems that they've been working on the past couple days.

Engineering Instructor Bethany Brinkman says the camp gives the girls a chance to get hands-on experience.

"They're learning how stuff works, or doesn't work in the real world. We had to teach them how circuits worked. So they've learned how to wire circuits, how to solder, how to build things in the shop with large equipment they haven't perhaps worked with before," said Brinkman.

Participants get one college credit hour for completing this week's camp.
