Danville In the Running for National Initiative

Danville, VA - Miles away from the capital, the White House has kept a close eye on Danville.

"Clearly Washington has noticed that we are making some real progress here," said Mayor Sherman Saunders.

Mayor Saunders spoke at the State of the City address about Danville's national recognition.

The White House included Danville in their 'Strong Cities/Strong Communities' initiative.

Across the country, 91 cities will compete for federal assistance. Danville is the only city in Virginia selected.

"If we are selected, and we are feeling very positive, it will be excellent resources at no cost to Danville," Saunders said.

As part of the application, Danville needed to emphasize three priorities for the city.

Saunders announced they picked economic development, public safety, and blight eradication.

"Economic development must have the strong support of the citizens of Danville and I think it does," said Linwood Wright, a Consultant with Economic Development.

"One of the main things you hear from citizens is safety, they want to feel safe in the community," said Sheriff Mike Mondul.

"On those three, everything else follows that," Saunders said.

The city that gets selected by the White House will get federal help in reaching their goals in those three areas.

"Once we are selected, we want the White House to send its money, its resources to help us bring that into fruition," said Saunders.
