Norfolk Southern Demolishing Iconic Smokestacks

Posted:

Roanoke, VA - A Roanoke landmark is being demolished and it will be noticeable to anyone who travels downtown.

The iconic Norfolk Southern smokestacks are already coming down. After decades of service, the coal fired plant that needed the stacks closed about ten years ago.

The area is part of the historic east end shops which sits just a few hundred yards off of 581.

Already one of the stacks is gone with the second stack and this entire silver building slated to go next. But the steam whistle that can be heard around Roanoke that signals shift changes at the shops will not be affected.

Norfolk Southern says the demolition of this precipitator building is needed to make way for a pedestrian walkway that is scheduled to be built from the employee parking lot onto the job site.
