Appomattox Getting Ready for the Sesquicentennial Celebration

Appomattox, VA - There's a lot going on in Appomattox right now at the National Historical Park.

The 150th anniversary of the end of the Civil War is right around the corner. Park employees are hard at work, preparing for that big day.

"Knowing that you're going to put a great product on this roof and it's going to last 30 to 50 years feels good. Especially at an important place like Appomattox," said Dean Harper, Historic Preservation Training Center.

Come 2015, the importance of Appomattox will be recognized by the world. The 150th anniversary of our nation reuniting will be inside the McLean House. Now, it needs a new roof.

"We're going to try to get it done as quickly as possible so it's not inconvenient for visitors," said Harper.

The roofs on the kitchen and slave quarters are in full swing.

Park Rangers were initially concerned that roof work would result in a temporary closure of the McLean house.

But the guys are working around it.

"When they take a picture of themselves they're going to have scaffolding around the building," said Harper.

Replacing the front porch of the McLean House may be a different story.

"The park will remain open but there are pieces of the park that have to be temporarily shut down for the work to happen," said Ernie Price with education and visitor s service.

Building upgrades are only part of the prep. Currently, a script is being finalized for a new film to be shown at the park set to debut in January 2015.

"It'll include a new sound system for the theater. It'll be high definition, the whole thing. So when we say preparation for 2015. That means a lot of things," said Price.

The park wants all visitors know they are welcome during the preservation projects and thanks them for their patience during all the work.

Work on the McLean house roof is expected to start on Monday. It should take around a week or so to complete.
