Family & Volunteers Help Fix Up Paralyzed Man's Home in Rustburg

Rustburg, VA -  VA - A Rustburg man is one step closer to getting a more accessible home.

Jamie Johnson was in a car wreck in North Carolina back in July that killed his wife and left him paralyzed.

Saturday, family members and volunteers were making improvements on the inside and outside to make it more wheelchair accessible for when Johnson gets out of the hospital.

They were at his home fixing the back porch, leveling it up and making it stable. They also tore out and repaired the kitchen floor, which they will replace with wood.

Johnson's nephew, Chris Thomas, helped organize the event and says he's grateful for the volunteers and the support they've been getting from the community.

"We had a lot of people coming in all day today dropping off stuff and making donations. So we've been really blessed with a lot of people that are reaching out and helping," said Thomas.

The next step is building a wheelchair ramp and then replacing the door to make it bigger.

A fund has been set up in the family's name. If you'd like to donate, you can contact relative Chris Thomas at (434) 665-5838.
