Mommy Monday: Pregnancy Myths

Posted:

Lynchburg, VA - Mommy Monday looks at a new book that challenges the conventional wisdom of pregnancy.

Emily Oster wrote "Expecting Better: Why the Conventional Pregnancy Wisdom is Wrong and What You Really Need to Know."

Oster is a Chicago economist and went through hundreds of pregnancy studies.

The first myth: occasional adult beverages are off limits.

Oster says that's not true, and that she found overwhelming evidence that having an occasional glass of wine or caffeine is not dangerous.

Another myth: working your yard could hurt your baby.

Oster says that one's true because there is some risk to increase birth defects if you do a lot of outdoor gardening.

Many doctors disagree with her findings, especially the part about alcohol saying they still strongly recommend you stay away from drinking while pregnant.

Oster's book hits shelves on August 20.
