Martinsville Job Fair Has 1,500 Openings

Martinsville, VA - Close to 1,500 jobs are up for grabs in Martinsville this week.

The Martinsville-Henry County Chamber of Commerce is holding their annual job fair on Wednesday, and they say this is the biggest one they've had in recent history.

Martinsville regularly has the highest unemployment numbers in Virginia. Many hope the job fair will make a difference for a lot of people looking for a paycheck on the Southside.

The sounds of machinery can be heard, working to produce fabric for inside cars overwhelms Drake Extrusion Incorporated's warehouse. Soon, it will get even busier. The company hopes to hire 16 more employees during Wednesday's job fair.

"It is the most effective way that we've been able to recruit people," said John Parkinson, President of Drake Extrusion, Inc.

At last year's job fair, Parkinson says they hired nearly a dozen workers.

"A lot of people attend and we get high caliber applicants coming through," said Parkinson.

The job fair doesn't just cater to those looking for manufacturing work. In fact, with 40 employers coming from all over the region, they will have a range of industries from retail, to education, healthcare, and professional looking for various skill levels.

"We really have one of everything," said Amanda Witt, President of Martinsville-Henry County Chamber of Commerce.

Witt says the job fair could be the answer to some economic troubles for the area.

"It's proof positive that there are jobs in Martinsville and Henry County specifically but also the region as a whole," said Witt.

"Getting 1,500 people back to work is just going to be a huge boom for the area," said Parkinson.

Witt says the job fair benefits everyone from workers, looking for a steady job to businesses like Drake, looking to expand.

Last year, some businesses hired some people on the spot. So employers say to make sure you are ready.

Witt suggests to dress to impress, bring extra copies of your resume, try to make arrangements for your children, and she says it can't hurt to have an ID with you.

The job fair will be this Wednesday from 9 a.m. until noon at the National Guard Armory.
