Principals are Scrambling For Teachers Two Days Before School

Posted: Updated:

Your child's classroom may not have a permanent teacher assigned just yet. Tulsa public schools need nearly 50 teachers for your students.

Today all teachers reported back, for the annual convocation, but there are still openings to fill.

While many teachers are busy decorating classrooms, there are many empty classrooms, waiting on a teacher to show up, or be hired.

Academy Central Elementary school is one building, not quite fully staffed. There, a fourth grade teacher is needed, along with special ed teacher and a part time teacher as well.

This is a shortage, experts say for schools everywhere.

The school superintendent says the district just gave out stipends to make up for no raises in 2010. That a lump sum of cash for teachers. But salaries could play a part in the challenge of competing for educators.

Principals say the plan is to hire substitutes until they can find permanent teachers.

"Our kids are in need of a teacher a quality teacher. I would consider highly qualified and ready to serve our students here. It's very important to me and I'm working hard to make sure we can fill that position as soon as possible," said Tedria Charles, principal at Academy Central.

Schools that still need teachers will hire substitutes, until permanent teachers can be hired.
